East, Japanese restaurant – The home of conveyor belt sushi
Claim this listingThere are countless sushi restaurants in NJ. But out of all those, few shine brighter than others. It is certainly worth while to talk about East as everyone Sushi lovers in North Jersey know about this place. This is one of few places in NJ where you can taste authentic Japanese style Sushi. Nevertheless, they offer affordable price.
When you first walk into East, you will see a large conveyor belt rotating around the sushi bar. On the top of the belt, different kinds of sushi are placed in a linear manner and they are rotating around the bar along with the belt. Certainly a strange display for those who haven’t seen it before. It is called “kaiten-zushi”, literally meaning a rotating sushi and they are widely popular in Japan as you can quickly grab pre-made sushi as soon as you get the seat. Yes, this means you don’t need to make an order and wait for the food.
You might be asking, how can I pay for the food then and how I would I know the cost of the meal? Vey simple. Based on the price of sushi, sushi is placed in a dish with a respective color. For instance, sushi that worths $1.90 can be placed in a white dish whereas more expensive ones can be seen on blue dishes. Once you are done with the meal and ask for the check, a staff will take dishes you have accumulated and calculate the prize based on dishes you collected.
As I said, the price is one of the biggest highlights of this place. It can go up from $1.30 (simple veggie rolls) to $6.00 (exotic seafood such as sea urchin and king crab).
What if you don’t see sushi you like on the belt? No worries. You can always make a special order and the chef will make you sushi you want.
I think kaiten-zushi is a great option if you are not sure about the portion you would like to eat. You can continuously grab a dish if you are hungry and stop when you are full. Also, it is also ideal when you want to taste a various sushi. You don’t need to order 6 pieces of California Roll. You can grab 3 pieces for just $2.00.
Whether you agree with the price or not, I think it is a great place to visit if you want to experience the different way of eating sushi.
